Bringing the story of Kwanzaa to the stage

ShaVonne Davis, Artistic Director of Kids Acting With Purpose (KAWP), joined Tashara Parker at WFAA 8 to share insights on the December 2023 production of Bone Soup: A Kwanzaa Story, held at the Jubilee Theatre in downtown Fort Worth. Directed by Davis and presented by Maroon 9 Community Enrichment Organization, the play brought to life the principles of Kwanzaa—unity, creativity, and community—through engaging performances of music, dance, and storytelling.

This production not only celebrated African American heritage but also provided young performers with the opportunity to explore acting and cultural expression on a professional stage. As Davis shared, Bone Soup highlighted KAWP’s mission to make arts education accessible for underserved youth, allowing them to gain confidence, explore their cultural roots, and connect with the community.

Bone Soup: a Kwanzaa Story

ShaVonne Davis recently discussed "Bone Soup: A Kwanzaa Story" on Fort Worth’s Good Day with Tisia Muzinga. This children's play, presented by Kids Acting with Purpose, brings the values of Kwanzaa to life through a creative retelling of the classic “stone soup” folktale, now woven with Kwanzaa’s core principles. In this engaging story, a stranger's arrival in a village sparks curiosity, and through their journey of collective sharing and community, the villagers learn the true meaning of generosity, unity, and collaboration. The performance aligns with the values celebrated during Kwanzaa, including Umoja (unity) and Kujichagulia (self-determination), among others, making it both a cultural and educational experience for young audiences.

Hosted in Fort Worth, this play emphasizes the spirit of Kwanzaa, creating a memorable experience for children and families. The production also supports the arts education mission of Kids Acting with Purpose, which provides young people the opportunity to express themselves through performance while learning valuable life lessons.
